Michael Howells

1942 - 2012

It is with much sadness that Verwood cricket club announce the unexpected loss of Mike, following an operation he passed away suddenly at home on 25th January.

All club members are welcome to a celebration of Mike's life at St.Peter & St Paul's parish church in Ringwood on Tuesday 7th February at 1.30pm followed by interment at Ringwood cemetery.

Mike had played cricket for Verwood for more than forty years. His right arm spin taking more wickets than any other player  for the club, even as he approached his seventieth birthday Mike was still taking wickets on a regular basis. In 2011 he bagged 25 @ 15.16 a piece only just missing out on taking the 2nd XI bowling award for the third consecutive season. Whilst Mike was not your Andrew Strauss with the bat he could be relied on to hold an end up & on many occasions had seen the team pass the winning line. A regular no.11 bat meant Mike could be found in the middle adjudicating proceedings, it was common to see puffs of smoke coming from the square leg region when he was on duty. Off the field he was the cheerful senior statesmen of the club & was always there to help, particularly the young bowlers & even the captains.

Mike will be sadly missed by all at the club, lets hope they play the great game up in the sky.
