Verwood Cricket Club Bio Page

Verwood Cricket Club have been around for a while, our research found that the team started in about 1906. During the one hundred odd years the clubs fortunes have ebbed and flowed.
At the beginning and up to the mid eighties we used to play cricket on
the recreation field, We had a pavilion in the top right corner
and players used to maintain the square.

At some stages the Club had up it five teams.

The end of the eighties was one of the down times the older players seemed to stop playing cricket at once and suddenly we were struggling to put out one team in the Bournemouth league. The pavilion was condemned by the council and we also were forced to move to playing cricket at Potterne park.

Potterne park wicket quickly developed a reputation for bad bounce, and there was a shortage of money to maintained and improve the square. We frequently had comments like "It's field but cut slightly shorter" . The changing rooms were a porter cabin and one never new it  would still be there for the next game or if a fire would have destroyed it.

In the early nineties A new Pavilion was built .The Verwood community association was put on a profitable path and things at [Potterne park started
to improve.

Around 1994 the Club decided to move into the New forest league, the Bournemouth league was going to finish and we decided that travel to the New forest was far easier that into Dorset. We naturally had to start at the bottom and quickly moved up a league into division three since then we have been up and down between division two and three.    Our First Team is currently in Division two.

The New forest league morphed into the Hampshire leagues a few years ago and is one of the biggest leagues in the world.

Last year because of an improvement in player numbers we started a second team.
They started in Division four, and finished mid table, They were able to comfortable put out a mixed ability team every week and ended up mid table. This year we are arranging a number of Sunday friendly matches to accommodate players who don't get a game on Saturday, if this move is successful we may enter a team into the Dorset Sunday league next year.

We built our own nets at Potterne park a few years ago, they were well used until the matting was destroyed making them unusable. We currently hold nets at West Moors Middle School on a Friday night.
Part of the membership fees are to cover the costs of using this facilities.  We are trying to arrange a tie up with Emmanuelle middle school to refurbish their nets and start coaching for kids.
We currently do not have any youth teams or formal youth training, this is because of correct E.C.B.regs making it difficult. When we did run them we found that we were a crèche for parents to drop off their kids.

Last Year we bought a roller and this has started to improve the square, rolling is done on a volunteer basis and we hope to start rolling in April.

As a club we try and keep our costs to the minimum but running a team is not a cheap matter any more. To play a Saturday game we have to pay About £60 for the pitch and changing rooms £ 50 to make the tea £15 for a ball we also provide equipment and the club has to have insurance.

Our fees are

Annual subscription Adult £40.00 student £35.00 youth £25.00

There is a £10.00 for all if not paid before 31st May New Members will not become eligible for Annual  subs until they have played three games. Match fees see relivent activity.

We also have various club social events throughout the year. It has been decided that the AGM will be held on the third Saturday of September and out Christmas party the last Saturday in November(Subject to availibility)
